Important Update: REAL ID Compliance for Domestic Flights Starting May 7, 2025
By Lori Maldonado | June 30, 2024
Plan Ahead for Your Travels
Starting May 7, 2025, all travelers using state-issued IDs or driver's licenses for domestic flights within the U.S. must ensure their identification is REAL ID compliant. Without this compliance, you will not be allowed through TSA airport security checkpoints, so it's crucial to prepare in advance.
How to Check if Your ID is REAL ID Compliant
To confirm if your ID meets the new Department of Homeland Security requirements, check with your state's Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). REAL ID-compliant IDs typically feature a star marking at the top of the card. Additionally, certain states issue Enhanced Driver's Licenses (EDL), including Washington, Michigan, Minnesota, New York, and Vermont, which are also acceptable.
Documentation Requirements
Each state has its own process for issuing REAL ID-compliant IDs, but generally, you will need to provide the following documents:
Full Legal Name
Date of Birth
Social Security Number
Two Proofs of Address of Principal Residence
Lawful Status
Some states may have additional requirements. Therefore, it’s best to check with your state's driver's licensing agency for a complete list of necessary documents before visiting their office in person.
Traveling with Children
TSA does not require children under 18 to provide identification when traveling with a companion who has REAL ID-compliant identification within the U.S. If children are traveling alone, an adult must escort them to the Travel Document Checker (TDC) and provide their own identification, informing the TDC that the child is traveling alone.
Alternative Forms of Identification
In addition to a REAL ID-compliant driver's license, the following forms of identification will still be accepted:
Passport or U.S. Passport Card
DHS Trusted Traveler Cards (Global Entry, NEXUS, SENTRI, FAST)
U.S. Department of Defense ID, including IDs issued to dependents
Permanent Resident Card
Border Crossing Card
Acceptable photo ID issued by a Federal Register
For a complete list of acceptable forms of identification and more detailed information about REAL ID, visit the TSA's REAL ID page.
Stay prepared and ensure your travels are smooth by securing the proper identification before the May 7, 2025 deadline.
Stay Connected at Sea: The Ultimate Guide to Starlink Internet on Cruise Ships
By Lori Maldonado | May 08, 2024
No matter how far your cruise takes you, having reliable internet access can be just as essential as packing your sunscreen and swimsuit. Whether you're eager to live-stream whales from your balcony on an Alaska cruise, catching up on your favorite Netflix series, or joining a Teams call in the middle of the Caribbean Sea, staying connected is now a must-have for many cruisers.
In the past, cruise lines struggled to keep up with the demand for seamless connectivity at sea. Traditional satellite systems were often unreliable, expensive, and frustratingly slow. But now, there's a better solution: Starlink.
What is Starlink?
Starlink is the world's largest satellite constellation, designed to deliver broadband internet via a low Earth orbit. Part of Elon Musk's SpaceX program, Starlink provides cruise ships with high-speed internet access for streaming, online gaming, video calls, and more. Since its launch in 2019, Starlink has revolutionized internet access for hundreds of cruise ships, enhancing connectivity and capacity as they travel the globe.
How does Starlink work?
Unlike standard communications satellites, which orbit from 22,000 miles away, Starlink's thousands of satellites orbit the Earth from about 340 miles above its surface. This closer proximity allows for stronger and faster connections, offering more bandwidth for cruise ships. With more than 5,400 satellites currently in orbit and plans to reach up to 42,000 satellites, Starlink provides near-complete coverage of all the world's oceans and waterways.
How fast is Starlink internet access?
Starlink's website estimates download speeds ranging from 40 to over 200 Mbps, with upload speeds ranging from 8 to more than 25 Mbps, and a latency of less than 99 milliseconds. While these are estimates, actual speeds may vary depending on factors such as cruise ship-based throttling, capacity, and global positioning.
Which cruise lines offer Starlink?
Here's a list of major cruise lines that offer Starlink technology:
Azamara
Carnival Cruise Line
Celebrity Cruises
Cunard
Holland America
Lindblad Expeditions-National Geographic
MSC Cruises
Norwegian Cruise Line
Oceania Cruises
Regent Seven Seas Cruises
Royal Caribbean
Seabourn
Silversea Cruises
Viking
Virgin Voyages
Each cruise line offers different levels of bandwidth and pricing, so make sure to check with your specific cruise line for more information.
With Starlink, you can enjoy high-speed internet access even when you're out at sea. Whether you're exploring the glaciers of Alaska or relaxing on a tropical beach in the Caribbean, you can stay connected and share your adventures with the world. Happy cruising!
To Drink or Not to Drink: Pros and Cons of Purchasing a Cruise Drink Package
By Lori Maldonado | April 01, 2024
Embarking on a cruise vacation often sparks excitement and anticipation for the adventures that await on the high seas. Amidst the planning process, one common dilemma that arises is whether to invest in a drink package. With tempting offers of unlimited beverages, it's essential to weigh the pros and cons before making a decision. Let's dive into the factors to consider:
Pros:
Cost Savings: Opting for a drink package can be a cost-effective choice, especially for those who enjoy a variety of beverages throughout the day. By paying a fixed price upfront, you can indulge in unlimited drinks without worrying about hefty bills at the end of your voyage.
Convenience: With a drink package, there's no need to constantly reach for your wallet or monitor your spending. Whether you're lounging by the pool or enjoying a show, your favorite drinks are readily available, allowing you to relax and savor every moment of your cruise.
Variety: Cruise lines often offer a wide range of beverages as part of their drink packages, from cocktails and wines to specialty coffees and bottled water. This variety ensures there's something to suit every taste and preference, making it easy to explore new flavors without additional costs.
Predictable Budgeting: By pre-paying for a drink package, you can better manage your vacation budget. Knowing the total cost upfront allows you to allocate funds for other experiences or souvenirs without worrying about unexpected expenses.
Cons:
Limited Usage: For travelers who prefer non-alcoholic beverages or consume alcohol sparingly, a drink package may not provide sufficient value. If you're not planning to indulge in multiple drinks daily, you might end up paying for more than you actually consume.
Restrictions: Some cruise lines impose restrictions on drink packages, such as limitations on premium or top-shelf beverages. Additionally, certain venues or specialty restaurants may not accept drink package benefits, limiting your options in certain areas of the ship.
Sharing Not Permitted: Most cruise lines prohibit the sharing of drink packages between passengers. Each adult sharing a cabin must purchase their own package, which can result in added expenses for families or groups traveling together.
Port Days: On days when the ship is docked at a port of call, you may spend a significant portion of your time off the ship, exploring destinations and participating in shore excursions. As a result, you might not fully utilize the benefits of your drink package, potentially diminishing its overall value.
The decision to purchase a drink package on a cruise vacation depends on your drinking habits, preferences, and budgetary considerations. While it offers convenience, variety, and potential cost savings for some travelers, others may find it less advantageous due to limited usage or restrictions. Before committing to a drink package, carefully evaluate your needs and assess whether it aligns with your cruising style. Ultimately, whether you choose to imbibe in the onboard delights or opt for à la carte options, the most important aspect is to relax, unwind, and enjoy the journey ahead. Cheers to smooth sailing and memorable experiences!
